Anabolic Steroids: Who's Really Cheating?

by: Mike Guadango

Now that the Olympics are over, the results are all in; the records are all broken and set so, now comes the talk of performance enhancing drugs (PEDs).

Fact: The US is probably the only country that doesn’t accept the usage of steroids.
This whole, “no, not our athletes,” thing is really getting old. We need to get over that, people. There are facts of life that we all need to face and here’s another one: No matter what we do about steroids and “cheating” the games that are played, someone is always going to find a way to optimize their performance to get better results. Whether we like it or not, this is the way it is.

It’s pretty common for people trying to get good grades or to have a more productive work day either at the office or during lecture to take adderall. Yet, we do not ostracize the CEO for being able to put in 20+ more productive hours of work per week do we? No, he’s a go getter. He does what he has to do to get the job done.

If I have a doctor performing surgery on me but he got a terrible night of sleep under his belt for some reason, you bet your ass I’m going to want him drugged up and awake! He better be at the highest performance possible!

So why is it taboo or cheating when athletes do the same? They’re at the top of their profession for a reason; they do what they have to do to get the job done! I can’t remember the last time I heard about a doctor performing surgery while having people in the background constantly telling him how much he sucks and that they can’t wait for him to fail. That happens to every player at every sporting event. They’re in positions where people get off on seeing them fail. I don’t know anyone that wants to see a doctor fail. I personally think they would be crazy not to want the advantage possible so that never happens to them.

Now, I’m not pro- performance enhancing drugs, I’m not saying that at all. I just don’t hold people that take them in such low regard. They’re just trying to be the best they can possibly be physically.

Look at it from this perspective:

Every day someone’s father is telling them how great of a baseball player Mickey Mantle was. He could do it all. My father used to tell me stories about how awesome he was and how if he stayed healthy how he would have had every record ever set. They say the same exact thing about Josh Hamilton. Thousands of kids look up to these two guys. Two guys that had all the potential in the world and let drugs and alcohol hold them back.

And on the other side of things, you have Barry Bonds and Mark McGuire, two guys who have been tormented by the media for over a decade. These are two guys who did everything they possibly could to be the best that ever played, whether they had God’s gift or not.

Did Bonds and McGuire cheat the game; did Mantle and Hamilton cheat themselves? Maybe we have the wrong view on things…
